Breast Cancer Awareness: Hair Loss and Self-Care Healing

This month is dedicated to those who have been affected by breast cancer and their families!

Like any terminal illness, there are usually some types of long-lasting effects. We have created this post to spread awareness and also help with using some tips and techniques for hair loss, natural remedies, and ways to implement self-care back into your everyday routine.

Before we get started all of us here at BlackXBeauty would like to commend everyone who fought and those still fighting. Remember you are strong, you are beautiful and most of all you are loved.

Breast Cancer and Hair Loss

One of the main side effects we know of cancer is hair loss. This is usually due to the various treatments like chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. Although this does not happen to everyone it does affect the majority. Having to deal with this as a side effect can also affect someone emotionally.

What is chemotherapy?

As defined by the American Cancer Society:

The word "chemotherapy" ("chemo") is often used when referring to medicines or drugs that treat cancer. But, not all drugs used to treat cancer work in the same way. Traditional or standard chemotherapy uses drugs that are cytotoxic, meaning they can kill tumor cells.

Chemotherapy is made to target all rapidly growing cells, so that includes hair follicle cells. This is one of the cells in our body that divide often. As to why your hair is always growing even when you don't see the growth.

Although these treatments are progressive there are still some remedies and ways to minimize some of the effects of hair loss.

Tips to Help Manage Hair Loss

Healthy Diet

As with most care tips true health starts from the inside out. These are some recommended foods to add to your diet during treatment.

  • Include foods rich in protein, biotin, omega-3 fatty acids, and plenty of vitamins and minerals.

  • Incorporate superfoods like, acai berries, blueberries, goji berries, soy, herbal teas, leafy greens, salmon, and many others.

Hair Care

  • Use mild shampoo and conditioner

  • Try to find natural ingredient shampoos/conditioners made for thickening hair.

  • Daily scalp massages.

  • Avoid any hair treatments that will weaken the hair follicles.

Self-Care Healing

The most important part in all of this is to make sure to take care of yourself. This can be a very trying time for some. Having to depend more on others can affect your self-confidence, but we do not want that to happen. So, next I will be giving you a few tips on how to start and keep a simple self-care routine.

  • Invest in natural bath and body products. These products are designed for the ultimate “feel good” feeling. Some made with aromatherapy scent will elevate your mind to your desired state when you pick the right scent. Look for products by brands that focus on the body and self-care, like BombedbyTiff, which specializes in bath and body products made with natural ingredients.

  • Designate the time. Plan for this moment as much as possible so there is no time taken away from you focusing on yourself.

  • Set the mood. Do not use this time like you would on a regular shower or bath day. Really take the time to create your environment. Light candles, incense, spray your favorite room spray which keeps you cool, calm, and collected.

*As with any concerns or remedies to health, please do not start any routines or use of any natural product until consulting with your doctor first.
